Barcelona guard Jaka Lakovic inspired Slovenia to victory with 26 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, while Radoslav Nesterovic contributed 19 points and eight rebounds.

"This is just unbelievable," said Lakovic. "We played so well in this tournament and were just one step away from the semi-finals. At least we have met our aim of reaching the pre-Olympic tournament."

Tony Parker's game-high 31 points was not enough for the 2005 bronze medallists who go home empty handed.

"We were doing great. We were third in 2005 and finished fifth at the world championship. We were looking for some stability and to try to go to the Olympics and now we are back to zero," the San Antonio Spurs guard said.

"It's very disappointing, you don't have a lot of chances to go to the Olympics and that was my second and we didn't make it, so I'll try again."

Lithuania gained automatic qualification for the Olympics after beating 2005 winners Greece 78-69 in the third-place play-off match.

Ksistof Lavrinovic top scored for the 2003 gold medallists with 19 points, supported by Ramunas Siskauskas and Linas Kleiza with 13 each.

Guard Nikolaos Zisis notched a game-high 23 points for the Greeks, who trailed from midway through the second quarter.

Greece will now join Slovenia, Germany and Croatia in the pre-Olympic tournament. Germany beat Croatia 80-71 in the fifth-place play-off.

Spain's Olympic place is already assured as world champion, so the two automatic slots go to their final opponents Russia and third place Lithuania.
